QUT Selection and Review Policy

This statement outlines QUT's Selection and Review Policy (click here for Word format) for implementing the Commonwealth Scholarships.

Selection process

Consistent with the Commonwealth Scholarship Guidelines, Commonwealth Scholarships at QUT will be awarded to those students who best meet the eligibility criteria for the Commonwealth Scholarships (see section 2.10 of the Commonwealth Scholarship Guidelines).

Students can apply for Commonwealth Scholarships using the QUT Equity Scholarship Schemes Application Form which is designed to gather sufficient information from students to determine which students best meet the eligibility criteria, particularly criteria relating to poverty and disadvantage. Detailed information is also included in the QUT Equity Scholarship Schemes Information Sheet for Students provided with the application form.

Applications will be scored and ranked according to the following criteria:

  • Financial details
  • Responsibility for others
  • Personal circumstances
  • Financial hardship
  • Academic achievement

It is the student's responsibility to provide the necessary documentation in support of their application. Information which cannot be verified may not be scored.

Consistent with the Commonwealth Scholarships Guidelines, special consideration will be given to Indigenous students to ensure a fair proportion of the Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded to Indigenous students.

A CLS Selection Panel consisting of representatives from key areas of QUT will consider the ranked applications and determine the scholarship recipients.

Applicants will be advised if they are successful or unsuccessful.

A student transferring from another institution who holds a Commonwealth Scholarship from that institution, will not have that Commonwealth Scholarship continued by QUT. The transferring student must apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship within the QUT process.

Students may hold a Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (CECS), or a Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (CAS), but not both.

For further information on the rules relating to concurrent holding of scholarships contact the Equity Section.

Review Process

Consistent with Commonwealth requirements, a procedure exists for review of decisions of the Commonwealth Scholarships Selection Panel.

A student who is aggrieved with a decision of the Commonwealth Scholarships Selection Panel should in the first instance seek explanatory feedback from the Chair of the Commonwealth Scholarships Selection Panel.

Where a student is dissatisfied with that explanation, they may request a review of the decision by making a submission in writing to the Appeals Committee.

The request for a review must be made within 10 working days of the date of notification of the Commonwealth Scholarships Selection Panel's decision.

The Appeals Committee can review the following aspects of the Selection Panel's decision:

  • whether or not information in the student's application, as submitted, was correctly assessed ; and/or
  • whether or not the scoring of the student's application was correctly aggregated.

The Appeals Committee may examine the student's application, the Selection Panel's scoring guide, and any other information which they may need to assure themselves on points (a) and (b) above.

The student requesting a review cannot add or change information on their application form for the purpose of the review.

Administrative assistance and information for the Appeals Committee will be provided by the Equity Section.

If required, the Appeals Committee will meet twice yearly. The decision of the Appeals Committee will be final.
