Frequently asked questions about equity financial support schemes
What is meant by a low-income student? Many students experience difficulty with the costs of living and studying. These financial difficulties arise from having limited income (e.g. reliance on Centrelink benefits or low-wage work) and having lots of expenses (e.g. caring for others, high accommodation costs and/or transportation, high medical costs etc). What is the purpose of the QUT Equity Scholarships Scheme? These schemes are designed to assist QUT students who experience financial hardship as a result of their social and economic situation. These schemes also aim to encourage prospective students who might otherwise
not take up study because of their financial and social situation to consider the financial support options that may be available to them. How many scholarships/ bursaries/ computers will be awarded? The number of scholarships, bursaries and computers provided by QUT depends on available funding each year. For 2008 funding of Equity Scholarships Scheme for low-income students has increased. Who is eligible to apply?Eligibility varies between Equity Scholarships Scheme. Please read the information accompanying the application form carefully. If you are unsure as to whether you are eligible to apply, please contact the Equity Section. What if I am already receiving a scholarship/ bursary/ or have received a computer?Recipients of scholarships or bursaries valued at $1000 per semester or more are not usually awarded another scholarship or bursary in the same year. However most students will continue to be eligible for a computer if they need one. Students who receive a QUT Starter Bursary of an Indigenous Access Scholarship are exceptions to this rule. If you are successful in more than one scholarship scheme (including Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships) you will be awarded the more valuable scholarship. If you were awarded a QUT Equity Scholarship or Equity Bursary in a previous year and do not hold a Commonwealth Scholarships, or your Commonwealth Scholarship has ceased you are eligible to re-apply this year. If you already hold a Commonwealth Scholarship which was granted to you in 2004, 2005, 2006 or 2007 you are only eligible to apply for a free computer under the QUT Equity Computer Scheme. You are encouraged to apply for other scholarships at QUT, details available at: www.scholarships.qut.edu.au What evidence must I provide to show financial and social disadvantage?Documentation must be provided to support your application. Examples of supporting documents include:
If documentation relates to your family rather than to you personally,
you need to document your relationship to family or guardians eg. birth certificate, marriage certificate, guardianship papers erc.
Is my application treated confidentially?Yes. All information and documentation supplied by you will be treated confidentially
and in accordance with QUT's privacy policy. It will only be disclosed to those
people who are involved in the selection process. QUT is also required to notify the Commonwealth Government of Commonwealth Scholarship (CS) recipients. How will the successful applicants be selected?Scholarship applications will be scored according to a number of criteria and rank-ordered by need. A selection panel will review short-listed applications based on information provided in the application and supporting documentation. There will be no interviews. How do I apply? All current and prospective QUT students who wish to apply for the QUT Equity Scholarship Scheme in 2009, including Commonwealth Scholarships, Equity Scholarships and Bursaries, will need to apply via an online application form available at the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) website. Applications have opened. Please visit the QTAC website to apply on-line. On-time applications should be submitted by the end of October 2008. This process applies to all scholarship applicants, so if you plan to either commence or continue your studies at QUT in 2009, you must use the QTAC online scholarship application process to be considered for QUT's Equity Scholarships Scheme. The majority of scholarship offers will be made by late January 2009 , and students who are offered a scholarship will be required to provide supporting documentation to QUT before their scholarship can be confirmed. Students who are not successful in the major scholarship round will be reconsidered in another scholarship round closer to the start of semester 1 . Where do I send my application?Applications for free computers can be sent to By Post In Person
How will I know if I am successful?Students will be notified in mid-January as to the outcomes of their Equity Scholarship application. Will I be able to keep my scholarship if I accept a place at another uni or transfer to another uni?No. Commonwealth Scholarships (CS), Equity Scholarships and Equity Bursaries are not transferable and QUT will not continue to pay recipients if they cease studying at QUT. Students who have been awarded a CS by another university cannot transfer this scholarship to QUT. They must make a new CS application to QUT. Where can I get more information?Jane Doutre
