Accommodation

On-campus accommodation is not available. The Student Guild operates an off-campus accommodation service, and is committed to providing services for students with special needs. The Student Guild has a register of off-campus vacancies welcoming students with a disability. Contact the Student Guild's Help Desk for assistance, phone 07 3138 5509, or access www.guildonline.net for accommodation listings.

Careers and Employment

Careers & Employment (C&E) assists enrolled students and recent graduates to make informed course and career decisions in order to reach their employment goals.

The C&E website is accessible to all QUT students and provides access to:

  • job vacancies and graduate recruitment information
  • graduate destination reports
  • employment preparation information
  • online resume builder
  • international information and discussion forum
  • employer listings and weblinks
  • career mentor scheme, and
  • services for employers.

The QUT Student Guild also has an area for part-time and casual employment vacancies at www.guildonline.net/classifieds/studentemp.asp . Other services to assist with employment preparation include group workshops for resume and application writing, interview skills and employment seeking strategies.

C&E also operate Career Resource Centres at Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove and Career Counselling sessions on each campus. Contact Careers and Employment at:

Counselling Services

Counselling Services operate on QUT campuses at Gardens Point, Kelvin Grove and Carseldine. Counsellors are available to discuss with enrolled students any matter related to academic progress, educational decision making, financial or personal problems. To make an appointment contact:

Equity programs and services

QUT provides a range of support programs to help remove barriers to success faced by some students in the following equity target groups: people with a disability, Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders, people from non-English speaking backgrounds, people from low socio-economic backgrounds, people from rural and isolated areas, and women in non-traditional areas of study and postgraduate study.

The Equity Section also coordinates programs and services to create an inclusive environment at QUT and to support the social and cultural diversity of students and staff. Financial assistance

If you have financial difficulties during your course, you can consult a counsellor on your campus. Emergency loans and longer term loans for unanticipated study-related expenses may be available through a QUT Student Financial Assistance Scheme. Contact Counselling Services for details or visit www.counselling.qut.edu.au .

QUT has a wide range of financial support measures available to students on the basis of both academic merit and/or financial hardship. Some of the major scholarship schemes include Commonwealth Learning Scholarships, Dean's Scholars Programs, Equity Scholarship Schemes, Vice-Chancellor Scholarships. All QUT scholarships are listed at www.scholarships.qut.com.

Students experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to apply for QUT Equity Scholarships Schemes, which includes Commonwealth Learning Scholarships, Equity Scholarships, bursaries and free computers are strong encouraged to apply for these schemes. Scholarships, bursaries and other financial assistance may also be available from your faculty or the Student Guild. Health Services

Students are invited to contact the Health Services staff at the commencement of their studies to advise of any specific health needs. Registered nurses are available on either a ‘drop-in' or appointment basis. Appointments can be made to see the doctor(s) in attendance.

Health Services are provided to all students and staff. For domestic students Health Services bulk-bill. International students with MBP and WCA, other overseas health cover will be bulk-billed directly to their health insurance provider. Other international students will be required to pay on the day. All services are confidential. Staff are not bulk-billed.Carseldine Health Services operates an off campus service near the Carseldine Campus.

International Student Services

The staff of International Student Services (ISS) assist international students with settlement matters including pre-departure information, airport reception, accommodation and orientation to the University and to Brisbane . ISS also assist international students and Australian students from non-English speaking backgrounds with welfare support, confidential counselling and promotion of social and cultural activities.

Language and Learning Advisers can help students to maximise their learning performance. Appointments can be made by phone or by calling in at the reception desk at Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses. A visiting service is available at Carseldine campus.

Orientation tours are conducted to familiarise new users with the layout and facilities of the Library. In addition, information literacy and library skills classes provide instruction in research strategies and the use of the wide range of library resources available.

Information sheets and brochures on services and facilities are also available which give details of the services and facilities offered.

These services include library loans, finding and using resources, electronic database access and use, intercampus loan service, and self-guided tours.

Staff at the Information Desk can assist with:

  • search strategies
  • how to use information resources
  • locating resources
  • use of telephone to contact lecturers
  • completing request forms.

Teaching and Learning Support Services

The IT Helpdesk, phone 07 3138 4000, is available to assist with inquiries about computer facilities at the University. You may also receive information and assistance with modem access to the University system.

All general purpose computer laboratories have software that may facilitate visually impaired students by providing text-based alternatives for email and web browsers. The IT Helpdesks are located at:

Queries about other Teaching and Learning Support Services (TALSS) facilities should be directed to the TALSS AV Services section. Information sheets and brochures on services and facilities are available which give details of the services and facilities offered. These include:

  • audiovisual equipment
  • audiovisual and computer preview facilities
  • audiovisual equipment loans
  • modem access to computer-based information, and
  • computer laboratories.

TALSS staff are willing to respond to your particular needs and, with early advice, can arrange the following types of assistance:

  • loan of equipment for use with hearing aids in the main lecture theatres, and
  • provision of equipment and facilities for the tape recording of books and articles.

The Hub , TALSS provides a range of support services to assist you with academic-related needs, including the following:

Academic Skills Development Seminars: a series of free seminars offered throughout the year across all campuses with a range of topics including time and study management strategies, academic writing, preparing for exams and seminar presentations.

Student Learning Advisers: located in the campus libraries and provide experienced and successful students assisting their peers with general academic enquiries.

The Hub Hot Line: phone 3138 9100 to request an appointment with a TALSS Staff Learning Adviser or to find answers to your academic-related queries.

One-on-one academic learning support appointments: Staff Learning Advisers can be booked in advance through the Hub Hot Line . A Staff Learning Adviser can also provide group learning support appointments for small groups of students who have similar academic needs. Advance bookings may also be made through the Hub Hot Line .

The TALSS website (www.talss.qut.edu.au): provides comprehensive information about all of the above services, as well as providing information updated on a regular basis.
