Who should read this guide?
This guide is designed for students with a disability commencing studies at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Prospective students considering QUT will also find it useful in planning their studies. The Guide explains how to access services and accommodations or adjustments through QUT's Disability Services, and identifies other resources which may be helpful in planning and undertaking studies at QUT.

What is a disability?
For the purpose of this Guide, a disability includes any impairment or medical condition, which may affect a student's ability to undertake a program of study successfully. Some, such as physical or sensory disabilities, may be obvious, whilst others may not be apparent unless disclosed by the student, for example, diabetes, epilepsy, dyslexia or mental health difficulties.
A disability may be permanent, short-term or episodic in nature.

Procedures for accessing services
Identification of needs
Students with disabilities who may require support services are encouraged to disclose their needs at the earliest opportunity. Early identification is particularly important in the case of those students with high support needs, to ensure that support is available before the start of the academic year. Failure to identify, or late notification, may result in resources being unavailable or delayed. Identification will also assist the University in forward planning and identifying areas of need.
Students can notify QUT of their need for support by lodging a Notification of need for support services - for students with a disability form. Click here for information and to download the Notification of need for services.
Although early identification is important, students are welcome to request assistance at any time by contacting the Disability Officer on their campus.

Documentation
Prior to receiving services, students requesting accommodations or adjustments of either an academic or personal nature must meet with the Disability Officer. You will be required to present documentation, usually from a medical practitioner, explaining the functional limitations relating to your disability. In the case of a learning disability, testing must have been done within three years of the current date and undertaken by a qualified practitioner. Guidelines for documentation are available from the Disability Officer.
Confidentiality
We treat the information you provide to us as confidential. Your information is held securely within the Disability Services, and is not accessible to other users of student records. Please read the Privacy Policy for more information.
Access
You may request access to the material on your disability file by contacting your Disability Officer. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to raise them with your Disability Officer, or if you prefer, with the Equity Coordinator, Gardens Point, 3864 2699.
