Teaching a group of students which includes students with a medical disability

[Print-friendly version]

Students with a medical disability may have frequent or unexpected absences from class. Flexible teaching of teaching material via electronic media is particularly helpful for these students. Consider taping your lectures so that students who are absent do not have to rely on other students for their learning materials.

Workload may need to be negotiated so that students do not become over-anxious about absences. Students who are frequently absent will benefit from advance notice of topics to be covered, and assignments to be completed. You may need to be flexible about attendance rules and deadlines, the number of academic tasks to be completed, and the amount of material students are expected to access from different locations.

Academic activities that take place off campus (such as field experience or clinical placement) may pose problems. Variation in daily and/or weekly attendance schedules may need to be negotiated (eg shortening the number of daily hours a student is required to attend and increasing the duration of the placement; being prepared to allow the student to complete the placement at an alternative time etc.)
