Student Guild Services

Student Guild logo

The Student Guild provides a range of services including financial advice, casual employment, a second-hand bookshop, advocacy and accommodation assistance, as well as specialised support for women, international students, students with a disability and queer students. Health Clinics

Vision Rehabilitation Centre

The QUT Vision Rehabilitation Centre (VRC) provides a range of rehabilitation services to meet the needs of people with vision impairments, through an expert multidisciplinary team. The rehabilitation services include optometry, social work, occupational therapy and orientation and mobility. The QUT VRC works closely with other community services to assist vision impaired people to access any service they may need for independent living.

Appointments at the QUT VRC are available on Wednesdays or Fridays between 9.00am and 12.00noon and may be made by calling Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 4.30pm .

Faculty of Health Clinics

The Faculty of Health operates 5 clinics to provide a service to the community, to foster research and to serve as a teaching facility for students.

These clinics are available to staff, students and the general public on a fee for service basis. These clinics are:

  • Podiatry clinic
  • Optometry clinic
  • Family therapy and counselling clinic
  • Human Movement Studies clinic
  • Psychology clinic

External Service agencies

Several government and non-government agencies that may assist you during your studies are listed below. There are many others that may be relevant to your needs, and these can be found through Disability Information and Awareness Line (see details below).

Australian Communication Exchange (ACE)

Provides a relay service for telephone, TTY and computers with a modem (ASCII) users. Callers to the service pay for the initial call, and the relay service pays for the call to the person to whom the message is to be relayed.

Australian Hearing

Australian Hearing operates Hearing Centres around Australia , including Brisbane and many provincial cities. You should check with Australian Hearing regarding your eligibility for free hearing tests, hearing aids and support services. (Refer to the White Pages Telephone Directory or phone 131 797 to contact your nearest Hearing Centre.)

Australasian Network of Students with Disabilities (ANSWD)

ANSWD aims to promote an equitable learning environment for all students. It is comprised of tertiary students with a disability who are dedicated to ensuring equitable access to education by working together with staff at educational institutions throughout Australia and New Zealand .

Centrelink

The Australian Government, through Centrelink, provides financial support for eligible students under various schemes. Application forms, information and assistance can be obtained from the Student Guild, your campus counsellor or your nearest Centrelink office. Contact Centrelink for advice on particular arrangements for students with disabilities.

CRS Australia

CRS Australia provides Commonwealth funded rehabilitation programs to people with injuries, disabilities or health problems to enable them to gain and retain employment.

If you are receiving CRS assistance, they can liaise with the University so that a coordinated service is delivered.

You should check with CRS regarding your eligibility for support services (refer to the White Pages Telephone Directory or phone 1800 624 824 to contact your nearest CRS office).

Resource Centre for People with Visual Impairment

Tips for success

"The essence of success for people with a disability is to be as organised as possible."

  • Make contact with the Disability Officer as soon as possible
  • Try to be prepared will ahead of deadlines.
  • Investigate access and locations of buildings, parking spaces, toilets and refectory before semester starts.
  • Access course outlines and reading lists as close to the beginning of the semester as possible.
  • Inform your lecturers/tutors about the methods you find work best for you in taking notes, attending lectures, reading, studying, undertaking assessment and moving from class to class.
  • If lecturers or other staff overlook your needs, remind them or contact your Disability Officer.
  • Take advantage of all services on offer to assist you whilst studying at QUT.
  • Investigate other possible avenues of information and support, both at QUT and externally.
  • Get involved in other activities on campus (contact the Student Guild about student clubs and societies and other recreational activities on offer.
