Disability Services Policies

Disability Services operates under the guidelines of the QUT Disability Services Policy (MOPP A/8.3). The policy is based on legislative requirements as well as institutional commitment by the University to provide an environment which is equitable and inclusive.

QUT's Provision for students with a disability provides guidance to the University on providing appropriate access and support services for students. This includes access, purchasing and loans of special equipment.

Decision-making

Listed below are QUT's policies covering staff and students with a disability. The University's Disability Services Committee is responsible for advising QUT on policy, programs and initiatives for supporting staff and students with a disability.

This includes the implementation of the University's Disability Action Plan. Equity Section reports on staff and student participation annually.

Disability Action Plan

The Disability Action Plan 2002 was devised through consultation with the Disability Services Committee and other sectors of the University to achieve better access, retention, employment and support for staff and students with a disability.

The Disability Action Plan 2007-2010 is the result of the first major review of the original 2002 plan and includes new initiatives and priorities.

The purpose of the plan is to:
•  assist the University to systematically review the current provision of services and facilities,
•  eliminate discriminatory practices in the provision of such services and facilities, and
•  provide a systematic and explicit approach to decision-making regarding the University's responsibilities and obligations under the legislation and its policies.

The benefits of the plan include:
•  the minimisation of discrimination and complaints;
•  encouragement of broader participation of staff and students with a disability at the University;
•  heightened prestige for the University; and
•  meeting the compliance required of an organisation in receipt of Commonwealth funding.

The Plan covers five main objectives:

  • Planning, resources and policy: to ensure the recognition and inclusion of people with disabilities at QUT.
  • Awareness, attitudes and responsibilities: to promote positive, and non-discriminatory attitudes towards people with a disability.
  • Accessibility: to ensure that people with a disability can access facilities and services.
  • Employment and support of staff with a disability: promote employment opportunities and develop a safe and inclusive work environment for people with a disability at the University.
