Understanding Student Poverty (NEW)
Target audience
Academic, professional and research staff at all levels, especially those in positions
involving contact with students from low-income backgrounds.
Course aim
To increase staff awareness of the services provided for students from low-income backgrounds
Learning outcomes
Participants will:
- gain an awareness of the issues of student poverty and ways they can assist students living in poverty
- learn about services and initiatives to assist low-income students at QUT
- develop an understanding of the impact of government policy on student poverty
- share experience of Faculty strategies and initiatives.
Background
QUT has a strong committment to providing access and support to students from low-income backgrounds. However, students from low-income backgrounds face great challenges to accessing high education.
To understand these challenges we need to consider issues such as:
- what it means to live in poverty,
- what limitations this can place on families and their children in terms of creating aspiration and opportunity to further education; and
- how to provide appropriate support to allow low-income students to access and achieve in higher education.
