Ally Network Seminar - update for existing members
Target audience
Existing Ally Network members only
Course aim
To provide Ally Network members with::
- an update on current LGBTIQ issues on-campus and in the community
- a forum for discussion on issues impacting their role as an Ally
- being familiar with LGBTIQ issues and resources, both on and off campus.
Staff do not have to identify as LGBTIQ to be Ally Network members.
Learning outcomes
Participants will:
- acquire knowledge of the relevant policies and procedures which protect all staff and students at QUT
- acquire knowledge about sexuality and gender issues for people who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, intersex or queer (LGBTIQ)
- understand the concepts of homophobia and heterosexism and diversity in order to provide an inclusive and safe environment.
- develop practical strategies to assist LGBTIQ staff and students.
Background
The Ally Network is a new initiative aimed at supporting staff and students who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, intersex or queer (LGBTIQ). Ally Network members will be trained to provide LGBTIQ staff and students with confidential support and referral and to provide general awareness amongst the QUT community of QUT's commitment to providing a safe and respectful work and study environment regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Prerequisites
Nil.
Course duration
Three (3) hours.
Course structure
Expert LGBTIQ presenters as well as Equity Section and Student Guild staff will
deliver this seminar. It is anticipated the seminar will be a combination of
presentation and group discussion.
