What is Equal Opportunity?

QUT has a continuing obligation under Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act 1999 to develop and implement strategies to improve employment prospects, remuneration and career development for women. At QUT the areas of women's employment requiring attention are senior positions and positions in non-traditional areas of employment.

QUT's program for women has been recognised by the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) as a quality program, and QUT has been recognised at an Employer of Choice for Women by EOWA since 2002.

The Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act 1999 aims to:

  • promote merit in employment;
  • promote equal employment opportunity and eliminate discrimination; and
  • encourage consultation between employers and employees on these issues.

QUT's Policy on Equal Opportunity at QUT reflects these same principles.

For further information, refer to the Equity Section web page which refers to the legislation, and reports on women's participation.

Strategies for equity opportunity for women

Career development and training opportunities

Strategies and initiatives for female staff at QUT are offered through the Human Resources Deparment and the Equity Section. The Human Resources Department provides targeted training for academic, professional and senior staff. This includes programs for academic staff on orientation, career development and performance management programs.

Professional staff can access programs for team and middle management, recruitment and selection, performance management workshops and specific training programs focussing on client service and communication skills. A key career development program coordinated by the Human Resources Department is the Women in Leadership program. Click here for information on Human Resources Department Staff Development Programs.

The Equity Section also provides targeted training for female staff through its Equity Training and Development Program. Programs target women at different levels within the organisation and develop skills designed to advance female staff towards their chosen goals. Click here for more information on these and other equity-related training programs from the Equity Section.

WomeNet

The WomeNet e-mail group is part of a broader women’s network which has been established in response to the views expressed by women at QUT. The network will include events and forums as well as this e-mail group. Topics will include:

  • hearing from women at QUT or from external organisations about their experiences, and
  • forums on career development and pathways (in conjunction with, for example, Human Resources, Research & Development, and relevant external bodies).

For more information, go to Equity staff networks within this site.
