The Reconciliation Statement
commits QUT to sustainable reconciliation between Indigenous (Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples) and non-Indigenous people. The statement recognises
QUT's responsibility as an educational institution in promoting Reconciliation
within the University and to the wider community.
 |
QUT's Reconciliation Statement recognises:
- the important role of Indigenous Australians as custodians of the
land and sea
- the rich cultural heritage that Indigenous people bring to Australian
culture through their customs, languages, spirituality, art and other
aspects of life; and
- the contribution Indigenous people can make to Australia's social
and political landscape.

The University also recognises the social, political, economic and educational
disadvantage experienced by Indigenous Australian peoples as a result of a history
of colonization, dispossession, and unjust legislation, policies and practices
which has disadvantaged Indigenous peoples.
Reconciliation seeks to redress this disadvantage and build new relationships
between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian people.
QUT acknowledges the need for sustainable strategies towards Reconciliation
in all aspects of university activity. Key strategic priorities for QUT in implementing
Reconciliation include the Indigenous
Education Strategy and the Indigenous
Employment and Career Development Strategy.
