About the Ally Network

Ally Network Logo

The Ally Network is part of a range of new services, events and support initiatives for staff and students who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, intersex or queer (LGBTIQ).

Allies are trained to understand sexuality and gender issues and to provide 'safe zones', support and referral for staff and students who identify as LGBTIQ.Allies are not identified as any particular sexuality or gender identity but represent a commitment to promoting QUT as a safe, inclusive and diverse university.

Information about the network is available wherever the Ally Network logo (above) is posted.

The Ally Network will be holding a number of training programs and events each year for staff who wish to be Allies.

To find out more information, talk to someone or get advice about your rights, contact the Equity Section or Student Guild.. All inquiries are treated confidentially.

What is an Ally?

Al-ly (noun) someone who helps and supports someone else.

Al-lies (noun, plural) a group united in support of a common goal or shared interests.

An Ally provides a 'safe zone' for staff and students who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, intersex or queer (LGBTIQ). An Ally is any person who is informed about, is sensitive toward and has an understanding of staff and students who identify as LGBTIQ and the issues they face at work, in study and within the community.

An Ally affirms the experience and rights of staff who identify as LGBTIQ and chooses to challenge the homophobic and heterosexist values of others in a variety of ways including by individual example, personal awareness and support.
