QUT endeavours to attract students from rural and isolated backgrounds to create opportunities for employment and education that may not exist in their home towns. The University also recognises the difficulties that students from rural and isolated backgrounds may face when relocating to metropolitan areas to pursue their studies.

This includes the financial costs of relocating, loss of family support, assimilation to a new and unfamiliar environment, as well as those issues that face all new students enrolling in university studies for the first time.

Information for prospective students

New DVD to help you decide about uni

The Equity Section unveiled its latest outreach initiative for students from equity target groups. project u is a unique resource for prospective students which addresses a range of issues which often deter students from considering higher education.

project u addresses issues such as the costs of study, managing stress, living away from home, finding appropriate information and keeping options for university open.

What makes this project unique is that the key messages are delivered by students and for students. Current students have generously shared their own personal experiences of coming to university providing very honest and helpful information to their peers.

The DVD includes bold animation, original music, informative interviews, competitions, and a supporting website. project u also gives students the chance to win prizes.

Getting in to QUT

QUT's flexible entry options (Equity Entry Programs) are designed to suit students whose entry to university may be adversely affected by their social or economic circumstances. Equity entry programs for prospective students are outlined below:

Q-Step program (for low-income students) seeks to encourage students from disadvantaged backgrounds to consider university study.

The Oodgeroo Unit (for Indigenous students) operates an entry scheme that aims to increase Indigenous access and participation into tertiary study.

Alternative Entry Scheme (for non-school leavers or 'mature-age' students) recognises the important role life and work experiences can have in preparing students for success at uni.
