Who are refugees?

"A refugee is a person who owing to a well founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, opinion, is outside the country of his (or her) nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself (or herself) of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it." (UNHCR 1979: 11)

VIRTUAL REFUGEE CAMP

To mark World Refugee Day (June 20), Médecins Sans Frontières has created a virtual Refugee Camp.

Today, about 33 million people live in temporary shelters throughout the world. Although some people ultimately return home or move to another country, the number of refugees and internally displaced people continues to grow. A visit to our virtual Refugee Camp will show the basic needs - shelter, food, water, sanitation, and health care - of people who, because of conflict or disaster, find themselves in a refugee camp.
