QUT's organisational mission and goals identify its commitment to social justice and equity.

The key role of the Equity Section is as a cultural change agent, helping QUT to develop an organisational culture that values diversity and equal opportunity. In effect this involves the creation of an environment which is supportive of the social and cultural diversity of students and staff in our University community, and an environment which is free from all forms of discrimination and harassment.

Underpinning the work of the Equity Section is a broad base of equity policies and equity objectives embedded in the QUT Instutional Plan and its four top-level support plans. These have the common aim of providing all students and staff with a fair and equitable opportunity to access, fully participate in and succeed in study and employment.

The Equity Section aims to fulfil its role through a variety of activities, including:

  • providing advice and guidance to managers and supervisors on implementing equity
  • conducting staff development and training activities
  • providing information and advice to staff and students on equity matters
  • coordinating the Discrimination Contact Officer Network and the Ally Network
  • developing and implementing equity policies and providing strategic planning advice
  • coordinating and monitoring equity programs and initiatives
  • liaising with Faculty and Divisional Equity Committees to develop locally-based initiatives, and
  • reporting on and promoting equity goals and initiatives through a variety of reports and publications.
